Site Selection Names Top Competitive States of 2014

Atlanta, May 5, 2015: Site Selection magazine has named North Carolina the Top Competitive State for 2014, a recognition based on a 10-part index of investment-attraction criteria, most of which are based on project data resident in Site Selection’s proprietary New Plant database. States are awards points according to their performance in each category. North Carolina, with 409 points, narrowly beat Louisiana’s 408.5, and the rest of the top five were not far behind: Texas finished third with 406, South Carolina was fourth (405.5) and Tennessee placed fifth (404).Â
North Carolina’s 2014 project performance was strong, according to the magazine’s two Governors Cup measures as reported in the March 2015 issue. It placed sixth in total qualified projects and fourth in total projects per capita. As the ranking was being formulated in April, one of North Carolina’s signature incentives, the Jobs Development Investment Grant (JDIG) fund, was undergoing scrutiny by lawmakers but was expected to be refunded during the current legislative session.
“Rest assured North Carolina remains a great place to open or expand your business,” said Commerce Secretary John E. Skvarla, III. “We have a superior tax and regulatory environment, highly skilled workforce and outstanding quality of life in addition to a flexible and wide variety of economic development programs to assist business with growth opportunities.”

“Seven of the top ten states are in the Southeast, which points to that region’s sustained competitiveness over the past decade,” says Mark Arend, Site Selection’s Editor in Chief. “Three are in the Midwest, including two of the three new right-to-work states in that region – Michigan and Indiana. A correlation is possible but not provable by our estimation, but the Midwest’s reemerging competitiveness will be fascinating to watch.”
