A LARGE-SCALE WIN FOR MISSISSIPPI

Compass Datacenters has selected Meridian, Mississippi, as the location to construct one of the largest data centers to date in the U.S. Southeast. The $10 billion project will support the buildout of a site that will house eight data centers by 2033. “Compass Datacenters’ multi-billion investment in Meridian marks yet another monumental economic development win for Mississippi, and it is the result of many factors that position our state as a hub for these high-tech projects,” said Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) Executive Director Bill Cork. “Speed to market, the availability of a shovel-ready site in Meridian I-20/59 Industrial Park and the capabilities of Mississippi Power were key to Compass Datacenters choosing Lauderdale County.” MDA plans to aid Compass Datacenters in future site preparations and Mississippi Power Company plans to supply approximately 500 megawatts of power to the campus. This investment is anticipated to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the region.

MICRON BREAKS GROUND IN SINGAPORE

Last week, Micron Technology began construction on its latest High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) advanced packaging plant, which will be the first of its kind in Singapore. The new $7 billion site was strategically located near the company’s current operations in the country in order to strengthen Singapore’s semiconductor industry. Micron already has plans for future expansion following the beginning of operations, which would begin as soon as 2027, in line with demands of AI growth. “As AI adoption proliferates across industries, the demand for advanced memory and storage solutions will continue to increase robustly,” said Micron President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. “With the continued support of the Singapore government, our investment in this HBM advanced packaging facility strengthens our position to address the expanding AI opportunities ahead.” The facility is expected to become operational in 2026, creating 1,400 jobs with the potential to grow to 3,000 following future expansion.

DRIVING TOWARD NEW VENTURES

China-based automotive manufacturer SAIC Motors has plan to expand its global portfolio with a new location in Egypt. Following the signing of an agreement with Egypt’s Al Mansour Automotive Group which entailed a commitment of a $135 million project investment, the company plans to move forward with the construction of an over 1.3-million-sq.-ft. facility. The site is to be located in the industrial zone of New October City, otherwise known as 6th of October City, just 19 miles west of capital city Cairo. SAIC will manufacture MG brand vehicles catering to markets in Europe and Africa, carrying an annual capacity of 100,000 units. Production will initially begin with the MG5 model, incorporating other SUV and new-energy vehicles in years to come. In addition, the site will house its own body shop, paint shop, assembly area, warehousing and office buildings. The project will create up to 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region.
