Denmark-based global health company Novo Nordisk broke North Carolina’s record for the single largest life sciences investment in the state when it announced this week it would invest in a $4.1 billion production site in Clayton, North Carolina. Spanning over 1.4 million sq. ft., the company’s second fill-and-finish manufacturing facility is expected to add over 1,000 new jobs alongside the 2,500 employees already working in the region. Clayton, located in Johnston County on the southeast outskirts of Raleigh, will now host three Novo Nordisk facilities, including the company’s first site in the United States, which has been in operation for approximately 31 years. “In Clayton and across our global manufacturing sites, we are driven by one purpose: to deliver more for the millions of people living with chronic diseases — and this facility will help us achieve just that,” said Novo Nordisk Product Supply Executive Vice President Herik Wulff. Construction for this facility is expected to take place over the next three years with completion slated between 2027 and 2029. Site Selection has covered the company’s repeated investments in North Carolina for years, including this 2015 profile that noted the company at the time had invested in the Clayton site five times since the year 2000.

Earlier this month, JBS Foods Canada broke ground on a new beef distribution center in Brooks, Alberta, a town between Calgary and Medicine Hat in southeastern Alberta that is located along Highway 1 and the Canadian Pacific Kansas City railway. On a site originally purchased in 2013, the $58.2 million expansion will increase the facility’s shipping capacity by up to 40% once operational. “This distribution center will ensure that JBS Canada remains on the cutting edge of supply chain technology, and we look forward to its completion,” said JBS Foods USA CEO Wesley Batista Filho. JBS Foods holds a major role in the global food industry, leading the world in both beef and poultry production with operations in seven different countries. Construction of the distribution center is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, as the company’s Canadian subsidiary continues to expand its role in both the local and international protein business.

BALCO, India’s first integrated aluminum company, is pouring approximately $958 million into a new aluminum smelter located in the city of Korba, located in Chhattisgarh, India, where the company’s major operations complex is based. The site, including a 300-MW power plant, is projected to produce over 500,000 tons of aluminum annually. New Delhi-based BALCO (an acronym for Bharat Aluminium Company Limited) has played a significant role in the country’s industrial sector and the country’s growth since 1965. The company introduced aluminum to India as a construction alternative to metals like steel and copper, with uses ranging from power transmission to aerospace manufacturing. The new plant signifies a major milestone for BALCO, as it will more than double the company’s aluminum production.
