Site Selection‘s editorial quality — on both the printed page and in cyberspace — has bagged three more awards in the 12th annual global “Awards for Publications Excellence” (APEX) competition.
The three APEX Awards were for Site Selection‘s excellence in the categories of:
- Feature writing, for the January 2000 cover story, “U.S. Car Wars: Toyota Turbo-Charges Its I-64 Cluster,” by Executive Editor Jack Lyne,
- Web sites, for Site Selection‘s online incarnation, www.siteselection.com, designed and managed by Webmaster Gary Nickerson;
- Online newsletters, for Site Selection’s Online Insider, a weekly publication that’s also written by Lyne.
A judging panel of veteran professional journalists conferred Site Selection‘s three latest APEX Awards, which are sponsored by Springfield, Va.-based Communications Concepts. Almost 5,000 entries were submitted for the 2000 competition.
“We’re very proud of these awards, which confirm a lot of the positive things that we learned in our recent reader survey,” said Conway Data President David Rumbarger.
“It’s also encouraging that our Web efforts are getting a lot of recognition. We’ve found that the Internet is a great way to reach very busy people,” Rumbarger added. “In fact, it’s been a very useful tool in keeping IDRC members informed of the progress of integrating with NACORE through the ‘IDRC-NACORE Integration Information Center’ on IDRC’s Web site.”
Fifth Straight Year for
Multiple APEX Awards
The three wins in the 2000 competition mark multiple APEX awards for Site Selection for the fifth consecutive year (significantly, the only four years in which the magazine has entered the race).
Both Lyne and Nickerson are also repeat winners. The APEX win was Lyne’s fifth.
For Nickerson, the win marked a repeat from the APEX Award for 1999, the first year in which the Web site was nominated and the first in which Nickerson served as webmaster.
“We are continually exploring new ways to increase the value of our online content to corporate real estate and economic development professionals worldwide,” Nickerson said. “As a result of this aggressive undertaking, we have seen the number of visits to our home page increase by a remarkable 427 percent in just two years.”
The win was a first, though, for Site Selection’s Online Insider, which was only created in mid-1999. The Online Insider appears on the magazine’s Web site and is also distributed as The SiteNet Dispatch to 9,000-plus executives in the real estate industry. The Insider offers ongoing updates of features that include “Blockbuster Deal of the Week,” “Top Incentives Deals,” “Editor’s Choice Web Picks of the Week” and “Snapshots from the Field.”
More Changes Coming for
Both Magazine and Web Site
“These awards are gratifying, particularly in light of the quality of the competition,” Lyne said. “In the journalism business, though, by definition you’re always a work in progress. Accordingly, we’re now looking at making some other changes in both print and in cyberspace to better serve our readers.”
A number of highly regarded publishing and business concerns were also among the 2000 APEX winners, Lyne added.
Among those high-profile winners were: ABA Journal, American Society of Civil Engineers, Biotech magazine, Bloomberg on Investing, Business News Publishing, CIO, Commercial Investment Real Estate, Crain Communications (e.g., Crain’s Chicago Business and Crain’s New York Business), ESPN, Far East Broadcasting, IBM/Forbes Special Publications and Institutional Real Estate.
