You might know that around 3 million people travel by air every day in the United States. But do you know how many airport authorities manage the public airports where those passengers embark and disembark? “According to the 2022 Census of Governments, there are 435 independent special districts operating as airport authorities, airport commissions or port authorities across the United States,” says an America Counts report last week from the U.S. Census Bureau. The data come from the Census of Governments, updated every five years with a variety of publications, infographics and visualizations that can shed light on location attributes such as types of local governments by state. The Bureau has conducted a census of governments every five years, in years ending in “2” and “7,” since 1957.

When you’re an architecture firm establishing a new Chicago HQ in a building designed by the legendary Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, you tread lightly but display your respect for the legendary architect whose work can be found throughout Chicagoland. That respect can be seen in this photo and others from SCB’s new headquarters on the 25th floor of the historic AMA Plaza building at 330 North Wabash. “Collaborating early with SCB in the pre-construction phase was critical to the success of the project,” said Tony Scott, senior project manager and team leader at Skender, the general contractor for the interior construction. “Skender took its responsibility seriously, bringing SCB’s vision to life in a way that celebrates the past while also supporting a new way of working.”
