Spring storm season calls to mind the recovery challenges when communities are hit by massive weather events, such as the EF-5 tornadoes that struck Mississippi and Alabama in April 2011. A September 2011 on-site report by Site Selection Editor in Chief Adam Bruns titled “In This Together” chronicled the aftermath in Hackleburg, Alabama (birthplace of Site Selection founder McKinley “Mac” Conway). In an April 2012 report, Bruns got a firsthand account of the experience from Gregg Kennedy, mayor of Smithville, Mississippi, in “Road to Redemption.”
Among the post-tornado challenges Smithville faced was a need for a grocery store. The town’s small population didn’t help in attracting one. Finally, 13 years later, Freshly’s Market broke ground last fall for a new grocery in town.

Federal agencies are not well known for quick turnaround on statistics. One possible exception is U.S. Customs and Border Protection, whose web page on trade offers recent updates and category breakdowns on revenues collected due to trade remedies and tariffs.

Minamitorishima Island, the easternmost island among the Japanese atolls, has been in the news lately for two reasons: its potential for the mining of rare earths and its potential for storage of nuclear waste. This photo was made in the 1980s by the U.S. Coast Guard, which referred to the island as Marcus Island (a name that histories say was conferred on the island by an American missionary). Among other purposes, the island has been used for meteorological work and tsunami detection. A full history of the island and the overall Ogasawara Islands is accessible here.
