Last week the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians announced it recently was awarded more than $12 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), primarily to support the development of a 200-acre-plus business park for industrial tenants on MBCI Tribal lands. A total of $10.7 million will fund roadway, water, sewer and stormwater construction. A $1.9 million grant will support the completion of the Tribe’s Workforce Training Center, currently under construction, and the installation of specialized equipment for HVACR, electrical, welding, and industrial controls. Plans are to hold a groundbreaking on the site in 2027.
“We have run out of industrial property, and this investment gives us the infrastructure to bring industry to Choctaw lands and create jobs for our community,” said Tribal Chief Cyrus Ben. “With our recently opened education facilities and ongoing job training programs, we are putting the pieces together to fulfill our goal of self-determination.”

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This long-exposure night photograph made by Mark Draper at Pipe Spring National Monument in northern Arizona in 2019 shows concentric star trails circling Polaris behind a traditional Indigenous brush-and-pole wickiup. Pipe Spring is located within the boundaries of the Kaibab Band of Paiute reservation. “Ancestral Puebloans, Kaibab Paiutes and members of the Mormon Church seeking religious freedom found refuge at Pipe Spring,” says the National Park Service.
