Aurora Cannabis Inc., the global medical cannabis company based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, earlier this month announced the completion of a major expansion of its facility in Leuna, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, a facility now known as Aurora Horizon. “The expanded facility has recently been granted an expanded EU-GMP license for the newly built areas of the site, issued by the State Office for Social Affairs, Youth and Health of Saxony-Anhalt, and will support dynamic job creation within the local vicinity,” the company announced.
Site Selection’s coverage of Aurora’s growing growth business includes the 2018 story “THC, CBD and GDP.” Site Selection’s storytelling over many years about various aspects of economic development in Saxony-Anhalt (and in Leuna specifically) include the January 2014 report “No Nukes, No Problem?”

At the 9th World Investment Forum in Doha, Qatar, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) released its Global Investment Trends Monitor, which found foreign direct investment “rose 37% in the first half of 2026, largely in developed economies, against the average half-year level in 2025. Cross-border merger and acquisition values rose 57% to $494 billion in the first nine months of 2026, while deal numbers fell 23% … Preliminary data show higher global investment values alongside declining new project announcements. Large transactions, megaprojects and financial flows can sustain headline values even as activity weakens.” Among other findings, “announced greenfield investment in data centers in developing economies fell by $32 billion. The report says this suggests further concentration of digital infrastructure investment in high-income economies.”
The event also featured the 2026 United Nations Investment Promotion Awards, presented to the Caribbean Export Development Agency, the Ethiopian Investment Commission, Invest KOREA, Invest Qatar and Tanger Med Zones (Morocco). Selected from 48 entries across 40 countries, the winners were recognized for “their innovative approaches to investment promotion and facilitation, their effectiveness in mobilizing sustainable foreign direct investment, and their contributions to digital transformation and sustainable development.”
