Jesse McCree, CEO of South Central PA Works and an advisor to both the Philadelphia Fed and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, earlier this month published a perceptive and enlightening commentary for Econsult Solutions, Inc., “What the U.S. Can Learn from Apprenticeship Degrees Abroad,” based on his takeaways from the International Center for Apprenticeship Degrees (ICAD) annual convening in Oxford, England.
Site Selection has long chronicled case studies and innovation in the world of apprenticeship, including “The Swiss Solution” from Workforce 2025, a special contribution to Workforce 2021 from Lumina Foundation Jamie Merisotis entitled “Apprenticeships: New Relevance for an Old Idea,” and insights into the One Million Degrees program in Chicago and a new State Opportunity Index from Strada Education Foundation published earlier this year as “Data and Experiences Point the Way to Better Education-Jobs Linkage.”

A new report from JLL, “Beyond Mandates: The Future of Hybrid Work,” explores findings from the company’s Workforce Preference Barometer 2025, which surveyed 8,700 office workers across 31 countries who are employed in organizations with more than 1,000 staff in sectors including finance, technology, manufacturing and public services.
“Three years into widespread hybrid adoption, structured hybrid policies [blending in-office collaboration with remote flexibility] are now the norm, with 66% of global office workers saying their company sets clear expectations for the number of days working on-site.” Meanwhile, “burnout has become a serious threat to employers’ operations” in the “always on” world of work, with nearly 40% of global office workers “reporting they feel overwhelmed or exhausted.”

Today is the first day of autumn, which means northern lights season has begun in places like Sweden. This photograph from 2022 was made near Sundsvall in the province of Medelpad on the country’s northeastern coast. A longtime forestry hub, the city was reconstructed in stone after a particularly devastating fire in 1888, giving it the nickname Stenstaden (Stone City). Sundsvall is also the embarkation point for the St. Olavsleden trail, the northernmost pilgrimage trail in the world, which has its other terminus in Trondheim, Norway.
