South Korea-based submarine power cable manufacturer LS GreenLink in July committed to a $681 million high-voltage direct current submarine cable manufacturing facility at the Deep Water Terminal Site in Chesapeake, Virginia. The 330-job, 750,000-sq.-ft. project will serve the global offshore wind industry. Chesapeake is where Dominion Energy’s 176-turbine Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project plans to deliver energy to the grid at the utility’s Fentress Substation.
Although a planned wind turbine blade manufacturing facility in nearby Portsmouth from Siemens Gamesa did not move forward late last year due to inability to reach key milestones, offshore wind has been building in the Hampton Roads region for some time, documented in Site Selection as recently as 2022 and as far back as 2011.
Denmark’s innovation isn’t confined to scientific pursuits. The sculpture “Mennesket ved havet” (“Men by the Sea”) created by Svend Wiig Hansen can be found in the city of Esbjerg, located on Denmark’s North Sea coast.
According to the 2024 edition of the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) published in July, most EU Member States have boosted their innovation performance, with Denmark, Sweden and Finland leading the way. “A broader analysis, including other European countries and selected global competitors, shows a changing international landscape,” said a release from the European Commission. “Switzerland is the most innovative European country and South Korea remains the most innovative global competitor in 2024, while China has surpassed Japan and is progressively closing the gap with the EU.”
