South Carolina Welcomes
IAMC and Foreign Investment

Which states are home to the biggest share of foreign direct investment in terms of employment? Whether it's overall employment or manufacturing employment alone, the host state for the IAMC Spring 2005 Professional Forum, South Carolina, leads the way, according to preliminary results from the 2002 Benchmark Survey of FDI in the U.S., issued by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
As it has since 1997, the Palmetto State was paired with Hawaii at the top of this ranking, with a foreign-owned affiliate employment share of 8.1 percent, or 123,400 employees. Nearly half -- 62,400 -- were employed in the manufacturing sector, led by companies from Germany, France and Japan.
The total value of gross property, plant and equipment for majority-owned nonbank U.S. affiliates in South Carolina in 2002 was $20.3 billion. For all nonbank U.S. affiliates in 2002, the figure was $1.2 trillion, a negligible increase over 2001, but more than triple the figure for 1987: $353 billion.
